We were able to delve into a variety of areas with the ESL classes this week and thus we were able to test new skills and find new learning opportunities.
We began by reviewing our vocabulary words that the students are assigned weekly, and we focused on both the parts of speech and meaning of the words. Many of the students are still hesitant to point out the part of speech, but they are slowly finding their way and speaking up. We also took the time for the students to find the vocabulary in provided sentences and create their own sentences. We discussed how we can provide our own context to help better understand the word.
We also undertook some reading comprehension tasks for each class and considered how to read questions beforehand so that we have a better idea of what we want to find in the text. Students still had some struggles completing all the questions in relation to the text, and I am hoping for us to continue building on consistently using complete sentences to answer.
Finally, we finished the week with another journal about what the students like or dislike about English as well as what they think they can improve. The students then focused their attention on learning the rules of subject-verb agreement after which the student played a game with special attention on those skills. This was probably the highlight of the week as the students gave a lot of effort in this competitive activity and were willing to make mistakes quickly before ultimately finding the answer. I must say that I feel quite excited about what the students will be able to accomplish as they feel more engaged.
