As "Literacy Week" was upon us for this week, we went with the mystery theme of this year and took time to understand how mysteries are built and how the students could give their own take on mysteries.
For many of the students, it was an exciting opportunity to discuss mysteries they already know from stories they have read and pull them apart to find a clearer picture of the elements that make them mysteries. They developed an outline for their own mysteries and considered what they would choose to establish their setting, problem, and ultimate resolution. In addition, they also worked on creating characters to be their suspects, detectives, and witnesses after developing a better meaning of what those terms mean.
Later, they were challenged with reading a short mystery story and answering comprehension questions that helped them to understand both the story and mysteries in a general sense. This story also provided a template as they began to write their own mystery stories independently.
In the following week, students will take time to peer review each other's stories and ensure that the elements of a good mystery are present in each. I look forward to seeing how they continue to develop their storytelling.
