For this week, the students were able to dive deeper into another area of much needed focus as we worked on the developing a better understanding and range of past tense verbs in their simple and perfect forms. It was a challenge for most initially as many irregular verbs were not among those they felt comfortable using.
In order to challenge that reality, we worked through completing a chart as a class that made use of their collective knowledge as a group. The students used the chart to complete tasks such as sentence completion or crosswords after which they helped to peer review each other's work. The tasks were still difficult with this resource to assist them, but it allowed them to make progress and be more attentive to the changes they needed to make.
They were able to look at the forms of the words in groups and practice associating them with their shared changes. In the upcoming week, they will be able to work on memorizing more of these changes through games and activities that continue to reinforce the background knowledge they have begun to build. Their added focus already gives me hope they will be able to show more awareness of these changes in their writing.
