Happy Chinese New Year! Xin Nian Kuai Le!
For this week, we adjusted focus slightly as the students had a chance to participate in the festivities, and it offered us the opportunity to discuss and review vocabulary related to this time of year.
The students were able to practice their spelling with some games such as hangman with students both guessing words and thinking of their own to test the class. We also worked on an activity where we practice appropriate preposition use and idiomatic expressions while reading and completing a Chinese New Year non-fiction reading.
Later, students also had a chance to discuss the Chinese zodiac and find the animal connected to their own birth year. With this known, students were able to identify traits associated with their animals and consider whether the said adjectives were correct in describing them. Many students were able to take the time to clarify the relevant vocabulary, and many classes then had a chance to write about which adjectives described them or not while detailing reasons for why or why not.
Finally, each class also had an opportunity to gain a little more practice with past participle forms of verb by finding them in another text about the Chinese New Year. Afterwards, students also had a chance to challenge each other to write sentences with irregular past participle forms that we have been practicing. Overall, the classes continue to show more progress and general awareness in this area.
