For the past week, the classes continued to work with their understanding of phonics and build upon the principles we have been developing in class. The students also worked through understanding a variety of the uses of past tense in their writing and reading assignments. In addition to this, students also practiced tense consistency by completing a story that was not yet finished.
As we began with phonics, students were tested on words we had already covered in past weeks. The students were challenged to remember how words were grouped into different categories phonetically in a quiz that made them use their listening and critical thinking skills. Students had to listen to a group of words and spell one word in that group as well as recognize the letters that represented that sound. Upon completing this assessment, students were able to check their answers and see if their visualization of the word fit the actual representation.
Later, students were also given the task of reading a story for comprehension and finding new words that were unfamiliar to them. They were then asked to define those words and use them in their own original sentences. As part of this task, the students also needed to highlight past tense words in the passages to practice their recognize of natural tense usage in writing and what is considered past tense. After this stage of the task, students needed to finish the story in their own original way while maintaining the past tense used in the story.
Finally, students had the opportunity to continue practicing their phonics skills in a sorting game in which students had to categorize words with identical sounds to their separate orthographical groups. It seemed that the classes were able to catch on to central goal of the task the more we played, so this is definitely a task that will continue to be used going forward to build on the students sense of phonics and spelling. For now, I again look forward to seeing how the students meet their new challenges in the coming weeks.
