This week gave us the opportunity to tackle a much needed area of focus as we targeted spelling and began attempting different techniques to improve upon spelling overall. For some students, this was the primary focus along with building on recognizing appropriate instances to capitalize nouns. For other students, there was still an opportunity to work through some revision of past tense verbs through matching games, crosswords, and word searches.
Initially, the focus for this phonics lesson was short vowel sounds. Those who focused on spelling were provided a missing letter exercise where students had to test their listening and spelling skills. Upon finishing this exercise, we reviewed the different types of spelling for short vowel sounds and corrected troublesome words by practicing pyramid spelling to gain better recognition of the components of the words.
Later, students were able to test themselves again without missing letters while those who had yet to complete the exercise had an opportunity to attempt it with the prior scaffolding. In addition to these exercises, students worked on capitalization assignments that demanded for them to find and circle letters that were left uncapitalized and took the time to rewrite these sentences with appropriate capitalization.
The aim and hope of these exercises is that the students gain have an opportunity to target the areas in which they struggle the most which tend to be the basic morphology and patterns of the words used. The goal is for students to have many examples to both see and write themselves so that they can elicit the rules of the language in addition to being explicitly taught the rules. Ideally, more of this will continue to become clearer to the students as more games are incorporated to practice alongside these tasks. For now, I look forward to next week and the students continued progress in these areas.
